Homework Calendar and Whiteboard: Helpful Visuals!
- Help your child break down larger projects into smaller deadlines.
- Have them erase assignments off of the board or “check the box” when they are completed to help them feel a sense of accomplishment.
Using His Student Planner: A Useful Skill
Look over your child’s planner with him daily and help him prioritize his homework. Relate the use of a planner as a tool that adults use in the workforce.
Prepare for Class: Organizing the Binder
Work with your child to organize his binder daily.
- Help him designate pockets for “Schoolwork To Do” and “Schoolwork Done” for each subject/class.
- Designate a place for “Notices” in his binder.
- Keep a box/container at home for work that is completed and graded from previous chapters if the test has passed.
Creating a Checklist
Work with your child to create a checklist to place in the front of his Binder that will help him to make sure he has the materials he needs for class. He can go over this checklist as needed.
Post Its: a Useful Tool!
Post its can be used to mark important information when reading. The use of symbols is also helpful.
Flow Charts: See the Connections
Flow charts can be helpful for students when writing or studying. Assist your child in writing the main idea in the center of the paper, circling it, writing other subtopics near it, and using connecting lines (like spokes) that connect the subtopics to the main idea. This helps students see how all of the ideas are connected.
Use Flashcards to Study
- Quizlet.com is a free website where students can create their own flashcards.
- Your child can quiz herself, quiz with friends, or quiz with you. She can take the flashcards with her and pull them out during breaks or “down time” to refresh her memory.
