ABC Reader's Program (4th-5th Grade)

We offer the ABC Reader's Program (Asset Building Champion), whereby parents read specific books in all 4-6th grade classes monthly and discuss the themes around social emotional learning (SEL).  The goals of the program are to:

1. Increase the number of developmental assets.

2. Increase the number of caring adults in students' lives.

3. Create a common language and vocabulary about respect in our school community.

4. Use children's literature to share concepts of respect, interpersonal competence, personal power, empathy, integrity, equality and social justice, honesty, and responsibility.

Books to be read this year are:
1) Friends to the End for Kids by Bradley Trevor Greive
2) Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae
3) BIG by Coleen Paratore
4) When Sophie Gets Angry – Really, Really Angry by Molly Bang
5) Ruby Bridges Goes to School—My True Story by Ruby Bridges (K-2nd)
6) How Do I Stand in Your Shoes? By Susan DeBell, Ph.D.
7) Sebastian’s Roller Skates by Joan de Deu Prats
8) Thank You, Mr. Falker by Patricia Polacco

5. Increase students' life skills in decision making, planning, goal setting, building friendships, identifying feelings, taking care of physical and emotional health, responding to bully behaviors, and peaceful conflict resolution.

6.  Increase student achievement and learning engagement by creating a more caring, positive school climate, where all students belong and feel safe.
